ABSTRACT
A look at the energy transition towards the hydrogen economy through the eyes of a precious metal aficionado.
Throughout the hydrogen value chain precious metals keep popping up at many stages:
- the production of hydrogen by using green electricity for electrolyzing water with the help of iridium catalysts,
- the purification of hydrogen to industry standards with platinum
- the transformation of hydrogen into other useful fuels with ruthenium
- the usage of hydrogen to generate electricity again in a fuelcell with platinum
And at the end of the catalyst’s life: let’s talk about the recycling of precious metals.”

BIOGRAPHY
Detlef received his PhD in metalorganic chemistry from the University of Cologne, Germany.
Since 1998 he held several technical positions in innovation, operations and technical sales in the chemical industry.
Since many years he is working for the technical sales of Heraeus Precious Metals Chemical Products and is responsible for precious metal salts and catalysts.
His interests are the use of homogeneous precious metal catalysts in the chemical industry in general and the upcoming uses of precious metals in the hydrogen value chain in particular.”
